Hey everyone!
Well I’m back on my feet, and hammering out videos again. This week we’re taking a shallow look at using render elements to help accent your rendering in 3dsMax. There’s so much you can easily do in post work when you have the right images that would be so difficult and time-consuming to do in the native mental ray render.
I’ve also got another video that’s compiling now and I’ll post that tomorrow or Wednesday, as promised. I’m still fooling around with VRay so I’ll have something on that hopefully next Monday. I want to really get enough exposure to it to give you a good primer. 🙂

Great! This elements are one of the most useful things at rendering time. Please continue with render elements. I don’t understand wich one to choose and how to use on PS. Thanks a lot and I’m glad to know you feel better!

Indeed very handy!
I have another tip/trick for you, if you don’t already know it, or didn’t mention it in one of your other videos (sorry if so) 🙂
With the Zdepth map you can easily introduce depth of field in your images in postproduction, without the heavy calculative rendermethods that usually take a lot of time (I saw you had a tutorial in v-ray to reduce this to a minimum, i’m going to check it out right away).
So how you do it?
Well simply go to Filter->Blur->Lens blur in Photoshop with your original and Zdepth map as 2 separate layers.
The alpha of the Zdepth map will be present in your alpha channels and you will be able to choose it as a source for the Lens blur Depth Map. Adjust the Blur focal distance et voila!
By the way, is there a possibility to see all your monday movies in a list?
Great website, keep up the good work!
Regards,
T

Thanks Thomas!
I’ve heard of that technique before but…well, I’m not a big fan of it but I can’t remember why. Might be worth doing a post on the differences between post-render blurring vs rendertime DoF.
Anyway, glad you wrote in! You can check out all of the Monday Movies in the series by clicking on “Video Tutorials” in the navigation bar along the top. Should give you the whole list in reverse order. 🙂
