I bet you wern’t expecting this on a Thursday. This Monday Movie fills in the gap that came up when I was really sick that one weekend and couldn’t make a Monday Movie. In this video, we’ll look at how you can use the Parti Volume shader in mental ray to quickly create mist or volumetric lighting effects. It’s surprisingly easy to use once you know what spinners to mess with- but be careful! It can cause high render times!

Great tutorial…the only thing I would mention is that the parti-volume shader only displays when it has an object behind the volume of light due to the images alpha channel. Thanks again…

As Ryan said, you need an object behind to see the effect, however, if you’ll need to create a scene without an object behind the spotlight, you can just create a sphere that involves your whole scene and apply to it a Transmat shader, should work good in that case too. Thanks for the great tutorial!

I am attempting to create a scene with the morning light coming through the trees… I tried to follow along this tuturial and adapt to my scene. I haven’t been able to make it work in an outdoor (exterior) environment. What am I missing?
