This week we’ll be taking a look at how you can set up a depth of field blur effect in VRay for 3d Studio Max. Since it’s as easy as clicking a checkbox, we’ll also go over how to adjust the effect to different distances and set the quality level so that renders don’t take so long.

Thank You, I’ve been looking into DOF tutorials and they’ve largely all pointed to using a complicated system of the VRay ‘realistic camera’. This is a far simpler and efficient way of producing the depth of field needed.

Hey Chaitali!
Sure thing. I got VRay by going to the Chaosgroup website. They have an older version available for trial download, and the newer version is available for a $50 deposit. Unfortunately, it’s only good for about 30 days so you’ll have to be pretty quick about it.

Thanks Met!
Well, saving anything as .JPG is probably going to take a hit in quality. Have you tried saving as .TIF or.PSD?

Hi Mr. Bluesummers.
Looks like this option works only for standart camera. Am I right? Is there any way to make depth of field effect for vray camera? Thanks!
