Hey everyone!
This week I’m doing a redux of my original Sub-Surface Scattering Monday Movie. The footage is clearer, and we’re taking a deep dive into how you can get started using the fast skin materials in 3dsMax and mental ray. Next week, we’ll be taking a look at the Sub-Surface Scattering Physical Material!
Enjoy!

Great Monday Movie. I’m not sure if this is a response to my request, but I really appreciate it.
Looking forward to next week’s Monday Movie on Sub-Surface Scattering Physical Material. I have really high expectations for that one!
Thanks!

I’ve already recorded it; it’s going to blow your mind!

I did this tutorial and my final render had some “artifacts” that I don’t know what is generating them… There’s a part of the model receiving (or emitting) light and it shouldn’t be.

Double check that it’s not Final Gather or some other indirect lighting situation. Can you upload the image somewhere so that I can have a look?
If you’d like, you can upload the .Max file somewhere, and I can have a look at the setup. 🙂

Thanks for the attention…
I’ve upload my MAX file and some renders here: http://www.slingfile.com/file/8nOC1ghTuL
I’ve circled in red what I’m considering to be artifacts… Let me know what you think.
Again, thanks for the attention…

Well, it looks like I’m having some trouble opening your file- I’m on Max 2009; are you using 2010? Might also be any special plug-ins you have.
Either way, it’s definitely an artifact of the material. It’s possible that light is going clear through the material, and illuminating other “branches” though I wouldn’t be able to confirm this for you.
I’ll post next week’s video a day early (tomorrow), and you can try things out with the SSS Physical shader. The problem may not persist when you have greater control over mental ray.

OK. I’m looking forward to the next video.
I’m on a trial version of Max 10 and apparently the files aren’t backwards compatible. I’m giving it a try at home to see if we upgrade at work. (Too many computers to upgrade, and too little money. Since the files aren’t backwards compatible, I gues the bosses won’t be upgrading.)
Thanks!
