Hey everyone!
This week’s Monday Movie is about how you can lower your render times in 3d Studio Max. Optimizing renders is a critical skill that hasn’t been very mainstream, even though it’s still important. We’re going to look at four of seven techniques:
- Changing the render size,
- Rendering areas,
- Changing lighting parameters, and
- Lowering render sampling.
We’ll be taking this render from 25 seconds down to 7 seconds without big changes in quality. Knowing where you can shave time off of renders is crucial to your productivity and to speeding up your learning.

Very useful. This is certainly something that some of us learned the hard way 🙂
When I was using Radiosity, one of the first things I learned to manipulate were the Raytrace settings for the reflections & refractions. It helped a little to improve the final rendering time; because let’s be honest: the true ‘devil’ in a complex rendering are objects that either reflect and/or refract the light used in the scenes.
And in modern Architecture, where glass is being used in so many ways —now we can make stairways out of tempered glass!— and with so many different textures, translucency and tints, handling the reflections can a be a big problem.
Speaking of reflections, I’ve always wondered how one can make convincing anisotropic reflections. Take for example wooden floors, that are so ubiquitous in architectural renderings; sometimes the only thing that tells you are looking at an artificial image is the lack of proper anisotropic reflections in the floor —the way the objects reflected are not only blurry, but the reflection ‘spreads’ and gets elongated across the surface depending on the camera angle. Another example where anisotropic reflections would be very useful is when rendering kitchens that have these fancy stainless steel refrigerators.
Good video as always, Mr. B. Saludos!
